Quake sewer repairs may take two years

Christchurch City Council says it may take up to two years to repair or replace the damaged sewers and water mains around the city, but is trying to fast-track suburbs that are the worst hit.

The council brought in 200 more portaloos this week to support the suburbs where sewers and water systems are still not functioning, such as Avonside, Dallington and parts of Bexley.

The council says it is working to install a portaloo for every four houses on each street.

Waste and water manager Mark Christison says it may take between one to two years to restore the damaged water pipes and sewers.
