Building Minister Maurice Williamson says the Government is looking at extending what Christchurch residents can do to repair their earthquake damaged homes without obtaining consents.
He says it is important to help people repair their homes as soon as possible by cutting down the red tape.
Mr Williamson says the Government has already made an Order in Council under the Canterbury Earthquake Response & Recovery Act, expanding the list of things homeowners in Canterbury can do without a building consent.
That includes minor repairs to foundations, as well as fixing or replacing chimneys, doors, windows, decks and stairs.
Mr Williamson says the Government may extend that list, but only if it does not compromise safety and quality.
However, he will not say what kind of work that could involve.
