A significant aftershock shook Christchurch on Sunday afternoon.

The magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck at 3.13pm and was centred nine kilometres north-east of Christchurch.

The power company Orion says the Brighton substation was affected, cutting electricity to about 3500 households for a short time.

Power has now been restored.

Emergency services say there have been no reports of damage so far.
