The Earthquake Commission says it has so far paid out more than $145 million for damage from the 4 September earthquake in Canterbury.

More than 110,000 thousand claims have been received, though the commission says several hundred new claims are coming in each day from all over the South Island and the lower North Island.

The commission says it is assessing damage as fast as it can and is making good progress, averaging more than 800 houses a day.

The commission says the Insurance Council is calling the earthquake the single largest insurance event in New Zealand's history.
