Aftershocks continue in Canterbury

Canterbury continues to be shaken by aftershocks. More than 2700 aftershocks have been recorded since a magnitude 7.1 earthquake occurred on 4 September.

A cluster of quakes bigger than magnitude 4.0 occurred over the weekend, including a 4.9.

This month there have already been nine aftershocks greater than magnitude 4.0.

Bexley resident Margaret Simeonidis says the cracks in her house get wider with each shake. The house will have to be torn down.

Kaiapoi resident Tracy Wynands says the aftershocks are making the damage worse.

GNS Science says the aftershocks are consistent with what scientists were expecting and residents should not rule out the possibility of more big shocks in the months ahead.
