The first permanent repairs to houses damaged in the Canterbury earthquake started on Thursday in the Christchurch suburb of Halswell.

Fletcher Construction and the Earthquake Commission will manage and carry out repairs to at least 60,000 homes damaged by the magnitude 7.1 earthquake on 4 September and the subsequent aftershocks.

Fletchers says 10 Halswell houses will be under repair by next week.

The following week, that may rise to 20.
