The Government and the Fire Service Commission have formally congratulated Canterbury firefighters for their work following September's 7.1 magnitude earthquake.
Certificates were awarded on Monday to representatives from more than 30 Canterbury brigades.
Internal Affairs Minister Nathan Guy thanked the men for selflessly putting aside their own stresses to help the community.
He noted that the brigades dealt with more incidents in those few days than they usually would have in a year.
Kaiapoi chief fire officer Paul Dalis says among the tasks his team were faced with was resuscitating a man who had a heart attack.
