More police now visible in Avonside

Police in Christchurch have boosted their presence in the suburb of Avonside, after residents asked them to increase their visibility there as a result of the earthquake.

A bus will now be based in the area several days each week, acting as a mobile community base for officers.

Central Area Commander Derek Erasmus says some residents have felt unsafe because of an increase in burglaries in the area.

Graffiti has also increased and many houses have been abandoned, leaving them vulnerable to burglars and squatters.

Speeding drivers are also frustrating residents, as the rumbling shakes houses.

Police have increased their speeding enforcement as a result.
