Thousands of shoppers thronged central Christchurch on Saturday, as retailers re-ran the Boxing Day sales ruined by a big aftershock on 26 December.
The day after Christmas is normally one of the busiest trading days for retailers, but last year in Christchurch a 4.9 aftershock closed down much of the city centre.
The Boxing Day replay was launched in Cashel Mall by Mayor Bob Parker and Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee.
It was organised in the hope that struggling retailers could recoup some of the loss in trade - and a shop assistant at Glassons, Kowhai Te Kira, says it was a great success.
Canterbury was hit by a 7.1 quake at 4.35am on 4 September. At least 16 aftershocks were recorded from 2am onwards on 26 December, the strongest being a 4.9 one at 10.30am.
