Christchurch Airport remained closed to all but emergency flights after Tuesday's earthquake.

At least 1000 people had to be evacuated from the terminal after the 6.3-magnitude quake hit at 12.51pm, but there were no reports of anyone being injured.

Airport spokesperson Monique Oomen said the airport control tower had not been affected and the runway lights were working. However, the terminal building was damaged.

A decision was to be made on Wednesday about whether domestic or international flights could resume.

Ms Oomen said no one should go to the airport on Wednesday unless they knew for certain that their flight was going to depart.

People were advised to check the airport's website or call their airline.

Wellington Airport said it had received hundreds of offers to house and support stranded travellers who were stuck in the capital overnight.

Accommodation had been found for everyone who needed it on Tuesday.
