Quake-hit farmers urged to contact federation

Federated Farmers is asking Canterbury farmers affected by Tuesday's earthquake to contact it so it can arrange help.

The 6.3-magnitude quake hit central Christchurch, causing at least 65 deaths and widespread damage to the city.

The federation says power was knocked out in parts of Banks Peninsula but damage has been slight in rural North Canterbury.

It has been in contact with dairy cooperative Fonterra about using milk tankers to carry fresh water to Christchurch.

Farmers are warned not to attempt to repair or move grains if damage to grain silos is suspected, as there is the risk of death.

Federated Farmers office in Christchurch has been closed due to damage, but it has activated an emergency number: 0800 327 646.
