Temporary facilities to receive bodies

The Chief Coroner says temporary refrigeration facilities are being set up for the bodies of victims of Tuesday's Christchurch quake.

Judge Neil MacLean says arrangements are also being made to transport the deceased to Auckland for post-mortems.

If necessary, he says, he will convene a Disaster Victim Identification Panel to help ensure all of the bodies are formally identified.

Judge MacLean says his main priority is ensuring those who have died in the earthquake are handled safely and respectfully and then swiftly returned to their families.
