Wildlife park animals disturbed by quake

The Orana Wildlife Park west of Christchurch weathered Tuesday's earthquake but it has been a different story for the animals.

The park's animal collections manager, Ian Adams, says many of the animals were understandably upset by the quake, especially the giraffes.

He says the giraffes stood in their paddock staring at their house for some time after the quake and many of the other animals, including the monkeys, were making "alarm calls" to each other.

Mr Adams says Orana Park is closed on Wednesday, as some staff have suffered major damage to their homes - though some have come in to feed the animals.

The park is New Zealand's only open-range zoo.
