Defence minister Wayne Mapp says the navy ship the HMNZS Canterbury will head to Wellington this weekend to load with supplies to bring back to Christchurch.
The Canterbury has been docked in Lyttelton and its crew have spent the last few days helping with the recovery effort.
Dr Mapp says the ship is able to greatly increase the transportation capabilities between the two cities and can carry heavy cargo like trucks and earth movers.
