Oil company Shell will donate $1 million to the Red Cross Earthquake Appeal to support the Christchurch community.

Shell New Zealand's chairman, Rob Jager, says the company has also offered assistance to the Government and is supporting recovery efforts in other ways.

Mr Jager says Shell has been part of the New Zealand community for more than a century and that while financial support won't dull the pain of the tragedy, it may go some small way to help rebuild lives.

Dairy company Fonterra has also donated $1 million to the fund and is matching donations by its own staff and farmers.

The Red Cross appeal funds will be used in organisation's response to the disaster, including transport and provision of goods.

Donations can be made on the Red Cross website, by cheque and at most of the major banks.
