Christchurch Coroner Sue Johnson says the process of identifying the dead must be accurate and releasing their bodies to families will take time. Maori protocols around the deceased are being observed.

Ms Johnson says families of missing people can help by letting the Red Cross know who is missing and describe any tattoos, jewellery or what they might have been wearing. The information will be compared to bodies in the mortuary.

Superintendent Dave Cliff also renewed a plea for people who have left town, but have not let people know, to contact the Red Cross.

The Red Cross number is: 0800 RED CROSS or 0800 733 276.
