Communities set up own welfare centres

Informal welfare centres have sprung up across Christchurch to supplement those established by the authorities.

One of the informal centres has been set up by Grace Vineyard Church in New Brighton, where many residents are still without power and water.

Pastor Sam Harvey says since opening the doors the church has been inundated with donated food.

He says a steady stream of trucks has been turning up and one man drove from Dunedin to donate baby products.

Mr Harvey says the support has been amazing and the centre will continue to operate while there is a need in the neighbourhood.
