The Salvation Army is in need of more space to store all the food donations it is receiving.
It distributed 900 food hampers to residents on Friday and another 800 on Saturday.
Major Robert Ross says its Linwood Avenue hall is not big enough for the demands being placed on it and the Salvation Army is looking for a safe, vacant building it could use as a storage facility and packing house.
Each hamper is designed to last a couple of days and when food turns up without warning, he says, it is hard to find enough space and co-ordinate what is needed for the hampers, he says. People should not drop off perishable goods.
The Salvation Army says it has had offers of food for the people of Christchurch from as far as Auckland and Australia.

Trauma services
Meanwhile, the Salvation Army is providing trauma services in other New Zealand cities that are helping cope with an influx of people from Christchurch. It is also bringing in specialist trauma teams from Australia.
Red Cross national programme manager David Neal says more donations are still needed because dealing with the aftermath of the disaster will go on for months rather than weeks.
The Red Cross appeal has already raised $2.7 million. Donations can be made online or by calling 0800 RED CROSS.
The Red Cross has about 150 volunteers helping in Christchurch.
