A Christchurch woman says she is angry her offers of freshly baked cakes have been turned away by her local welfare centre.

The St Albans woman, who wants to be known only as Sheryl, says she spent all day baking banana loaves and slices, but when she took them down to the welfare centre in Burnside the man guarding the gate refused to take them.

She says she was encouraged by the Red Cross, but now will have to take the cakes somewhere else.

A spokesperson for Civil Defence says the welfare centres are very well stocked with food from the big food companies and no more is needed at the moment.
