Health board bemused as babies keep to their timetable

The Canterbury District Health Board says there has been no noticeable rise in the number of births since the earthquake.

Midwifery director Samantha Burke says there have been 65 births since Tuesday.

She says the neo-natal unit is busy and any complications are being redirected to Timaru or Wellington.

Ms Burke says she is not sure why there is no noticeable spike, as happened after the September earthquake.

Birth put on hold

A new mother, on her way to the hospital to be induced when the earthquake struck, says she decided to return home because it wasn't a good time to have a baby.

Jess McBrearty returned to the hospital a few of days later and gave birth to a boy, Joseph David.

She says the aftershocks are a bit scary as the whole building wobbles but she's heard it's the safest building in Christchurch.

Her partner says while driving to the hospital on Tuesday afternoon, he initially thought the car had a flat tyre, but then realised the car was still shaking and it was an earthquake.
