Governor-General Sir Anand Satyanand says there is now pressure on the Government and its agencies to rebuild Christchurch.

Sir Anand was speaking on Sunday afternoon after touring the devastated city centre, and seeing at first hand the operation at Civil Defence headquarters in the city.

He says a huge work programme to rebuild the city lies ahead but the people of Christchurch are not alone.

He says people all over New Zealand stand alongside them, and the event has made people realise that New Zealanders are a single family.

Sir Anand says he visited the city in the aftermath of the 4 September earthquake and this latest situation is much more serious.
