77 Cashmere, Redcliffs homes evacuated

Police say more people had to be evacuated from their homes on Monday night, because of fears that nearby banks could give way as aftershocks continue.

People from 65 homes in Bowenvale Ave, Cashmere, and 12 homes in Redcliffs were told they had to leave.

Superintendent Russell Gibson says engineers will check those properties on Tuesday morning.

In Sumner and Clifton, however, nearly all the residents from the 200 properties evacuated on Monday were allowed to return home in the evening. Fewer than 20 properties remain evacuated.

The houses were evacuated because of concerns about the stability of a rockface.

The main Sumner and Clifton roads also reopened on Monday night.
