Accommodation desperately needed before winter

Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee says temporary accommodation for those displaced by the earthquake is desperately needed before winter sets in.

Mr Brownlee says 100,000 homes will need to be repaired, and up to 10,000 rebuilt from scratch.

He says it takes five hours to assess each house, and with tens of thousands to be checked, there is a long road ahead.

But fast progress has been made as the normal bureaucratic processes are put to the side, Mr Brownlee says, and he is determined to keep it that way for the rebuilding work.
