A strong aftershock rattled Christchurch on Tuesday morning.
The 4.3-magnitude tremor was recorded at 9.10am, centred 10 kilometres east of Lyttelton.
There were also aftershocks at 4.43am (3.1), 6.37am (3.6) and 7.40am (3.7).
Since midnight on Monday, GNS Science has recorded 28 aftershocks, ranging in magnitude from 2.7 to 4.3.
