Red Cross to decide appeal grants

The Red Cross will meet on Wednesday to decide how to distribute the money raised from its earthquake appeal.

The chair of the Red Cross 2011 Earthquake Appeal Commission, Sir John Hansen, says appeals from around the world have raised more than $11 million including personal pledges from both the Queen and Prince Charles.

Sir John says it is likely the commission will issue emergency cash grants, as it did after last September's quake,

He says it will also need to consider how to help the families of people injured and killed.

Sir John says the Red Cross intends to visit the worst affected areas of the city to encourage people to apply for the grants.
