Woman offers free laundry service

An Avonhead woman has set up a free washing service for Christchurch residents without power and water.

Many homes, especially in the eastern suburbs, are still without essential services more than a week after the 22 February earthquake.

Marshalands resident Joc Murray, a teacher, said many families she had contact with had no way of cleaning their clothes, so with her contacts at Avonhead Baptist Church she has set up a network of people taking in other people's washing.

Ms Murray says volunteers have taken in about 30 loads of washing since Thursday and were to pick up 10 loads on Wednesday.

She is encouraging people in need to contact her via the Avonhead Baptist Church or on 021 146 7507.
