Out-of-town pressure on lawyers 'unlikely'

The Christchurch branch of the Law Society says it has not heard of any cases of out-of-town lawyers pressuring local firms.

The Law Society has emailed all lawyers asking them to act responsibly and not insist on tight settlement dates or fast responses from the city.

Many Christchurch legal professionals are unable to access their offices and files because of damage and the inner-city cordon.

Branch president Allister Davis says lawyers outside the area have assisted Christchurch colleagues in every way, offering support and accommodation, and so far he has heard no negative reports.

Mr Davis says most other lawyers will be cutting their Christchurch colleagues a fair bit of slack.
