Timaru District Council says more than 7000 Christchurch residents have so far passed through its welfare centre at Caroline Bay.

It says the centre will continue to offer practical assistance over the weekend, such as counselling, Work and Income financial support and advice.

The council says the Salvation Army in Timaru is still accepting donations of food and toiletries, as well as nappies.
