There are further signs that operations are returning to normal at the Port of Lyttelton, a week and a half after the earthquake.

Roads and wharves were damaged in the 6.3 magnitude quake.

The port has been a lifeline for the restocking of fuel, water, food and medical supplies in the aftermath of the disaster.

The port's chief executive, Peter Davie, says business is now starting to return to normal, marked by the arrival of the first coal train on Saturday.

He says the first log vessel to arrive since the quake, the Louise Bulker, also berthed on Saturday.

Mr Davie says HMNZS Otago is due to leave Lyttelton at 7pm on Saturday, and a community send-off for the navy crew was held on Saturday afternoon.
