At least 200 Christchurch students are arriving in Adelaide on Sunday afternoon to start university courses interrupted by the earthquake.

The students are flying to Australia on a chartered Qantas jet after the University of Adelaide offered to take at least 500 first-year students from its devastated sister city.

The students will be staying with local families who have volunteered to host them.

The University of Canterbury students are in the faculties of Arts, Engineering, Commerce and Marketing.
