About 400 Christchurch people have so far taken up the chance of a free holiday in Hawke's Bay.

The offer was made by the Hastings District and Napier City councils.

Hastings Mayor Lawrence Yule says he is pleased the scheme is working.

Some 800 free flights from Christchurch to Hawke's Bay have been pledged and council staff are sourcing accommodation.

People from Canterbury can register their details on the Hastings District Council website or call 06 834 4114.
