Chemical toilets here for some time, residents warned

People in Christchurch could be using chemical toilets for weeks, because of the time needed to repair the sewage system.

The city council says that even houses with running water may not have working sewerage because pipes in areas badly affected by liquefaction are full of silt and sand.

Spokesperson Mark Christison says hundreds of kilometres of pipes will have to be cleared, which is no easy job.

Mr Christison says people without sewerage should be prepared for the long haul.
