Cruise ships that would normally dock in Lyttelton have been diverted to Akaroa and will do so for the rest of the summer cruise season, which ends next month.
Industry group Cruise New Zealand says eight ships have already been diverted, and five more are due in Akaroa in the next four weeks.
Spokesperson Craig Harris says cruise liner companies are avoiding taking passengers from Akaroa into central Christchurch.
