More than half of all schools in Christchurch are expected to be back up and running this week.

Education Minister Anne Tolley says 100 schools have been cleared for students to return following the devastating earthquake in February.

Mrs Tolley says 21 schools are open and a further 26 were due to start back on Wednesday.

Some schools have had to bring in portable toilets because their wastewater systems are not working.

The Education Ministry is giving an additional $20 million to schools and early childhood services affected.

Some 88 early childhood education centres have re-opened and another 135 are set to open this week.
