Christchurch was hit by a strong aftershock on Wednesday afternoon.

The 4.1-magnitude quake struck at 1.20pm on Wednesday, centred about five kilometres from the badly damaged suburb of Lyttelton at a depth of eight kilometres.

A Radio New Zealand reporter in Christchurch said the jolt was strong and was probably felt widely in the region.
