Northern part of cordon opened

Christchurch got another part of its CBD back on Friday morning when the northern part of the cordon was opened to the public.

The area - known as Zone 3 - stretches from Fitzgerald Ave to Montreal St.

It includes the 59-resident Resthaven rest home, which suffered minor damage during the quake but was able to stay open, despite being in the cordon.

But manager Kate Ashdowne has criticised police and army staff on the inner city cordon.

She says she was told to report to Civil Defence by the army but was then told that information was wrong.

And she says the Australian police on the cordon were inconsistent and often didn't let staff vehicles or supplies such as food in.

Ms Ashdowne says the incidents were stressful and unhelpful.

She says the home is still boiling all its drinking water and only showering residents once a week because it's not connected to the city supply.

The eastern and western sides of the cordon were opened earlier this week but the cordon remains in place between Durham St and Barbadoes St.
