Hotel demoliton method to be decided soon

Updated at 8:59 pm on 11 March 2011

Civil Defence in Christchurch says it expects to finalise plans for the demolition of the Hotel Grand Chancellor in the next few days.

The 26-storey building in the central city has been on a lean since the day after last month's earthquake.

A Civil Defence controller, Steve Brazier, says the Grand Chancellor has to be demolished and they are looking at two options.

These are to bring the building down in bits or in one dramatic explosion.

He says while faster, the concussion on the ground from an explosion would affect the buildings in the surrounding area.
