Family violence a concern after quake

Police will be out in force in rural areas of Canterbury after concerns about an increase in alcohol-related incidents after the quake in Christchurch.

Superintendent Dave Cliff says many displaced families have moved to outlying areas such as Oxford, Rangiora, Hanmer Springs and Amberly.

He says police have noticed an increase in people becoming intoxicated and having arguments with partners, as well as street disorder, in these areas.

Superintendent Cliff says police will be patrolling the streets on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and a helicopter will also be used.
