Temporary campground to provide quake housing

Civil Defence says 150 campervans will be moved into the Canterbury A&P showground in the next few days to help with temporary accommodation.

It says Housing New Zealand and the Department of Building and Housing have provided emergency accommodation since the earthquake.

Civil Defence national controller John Hamilton says the campervans will be moved with the help of the army, which will be checking each one to make sure it is safe.

He says it is imperative to get people into more comfortable and appropriate short-term accommodation as soon as possible.

Mr Hamilton says an announcement will be made soon about the temporary accommodation package, setting out the options for those in difficult situations.
