Farmy Army and student volunteers out in force again

Quake-ravaged Christchurch's eastern suburbs have again been visited by Federated Farmers clean-up teams as well as student volunteers.

The "Farmy Army" have been helping to remove silt and rubble from people's homes on the second-to-last day of their operation.

On Saturday the teams focussed their attention on an especially hard-hit neighbourhood around Waitaki St, New Brighton.

A spokesperson, David Broome, says about 400 volunteers were shovelling silt from Christchurch suburbs on Saturday morning.

But they have been inundated with so many requests, he says, as people return to the city and discover damage and liquefaction, that they could easily use more help.

Anyone able to help is asked to go to the showgrounds at Curtletts Rd, Sockburn, with wheelbarrows and shovels between 7am and midday on Sunday.
