The Queen has made a donation to the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal.

Prime Minister John Key says the donation, through the Queen's Charitable Trust, is a generous and gratefully received measure of support for the people of Christchurch.

A spokesperson for the appeal says the amount of the donation will not be revealed as donations remain confidential unless donors wish them to be made public.

Mr Key has thanked the Queen for her support and says Prince William's visit this week has been deeply humbling and was met with much enthusiasm and goodwill from New Zealanders.

Prince William and his fiancee Kate Middleton have included the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal in their Royal Wedding charitable gift fund for those who wish to donate to charity as a wedding gift.
