Owners of some quake-hit buildings can't be found

Demolition has been approved for at least 17 buildings in Christchurch's central city whose owners have not been able to be contacted.

A total of 139 approvals have so far been given for building demolition.

Civil Defence director John Hamilton says that, in many cases, the owners of the buildings have only post office box numbers listed and have not been able to be contacted.

The buildings must be pulled down, he says, because they represent a risk to other areas around them and are an impediment to opening up access for machinery work and eventual access through the badly-damaged central city as the cordon is gradually reduced.
