Lyttelton Port to use quake rubble for reclamation

Lyttelton Port is using rubble from buildings demolished in the February quake to expand the port.

Chief executive Peter Davie said the rubble will be dumped into the sea to reclaim land which would then be used for storage while quake-damaged buildings are being repaired.

Mr Davie says the Canterbury regional council supports the plan and the port will screen the rubble to make sure no contaminated material goes into the sea.

He says the scheme is a win-win, which will save money for both the port and contractors.
