Police in Christchurch are urging residents to be vigilant about burglars.

Inspector Malcolm Johnston says that while crime has not increased since the quake, burglaries are still occurring.

He says police are seeing attempted daytime burglaries where people are making excuses for being at properties which they do not own.

The public is urged to call them if they encounter this.

Police resources in the city have doubled, with 200 extra personnel from around the country.

Inspector Johnston says the rate of domestic violence incidents is starting to stabilise but officers are seeing an increase in drink driving.
