Two charged with breach of red zone

Civil Defence says it is taking very seriously any suggestion of criminal activity by demolition companies and contractors in quake-damaged parts of Christchurch.

Police have charged two men with breaching the city cordon - after Civil Defence said they were found acting suspiciously inside the city's red zone.

Police arrested a 54-year-old construction worker and a 41-year-old company director shortly after midday on Friday.

Civil Defence says so far it has withdrawn access and accreditation for one individual and one company.

It says it's working closely with the police who will actively investigate and prosecute any criminal behaviour reported to them.

Both men are due to appear in the Christchurch District Court on 23 May.
