Police in Christchurch say more than 2726 cars have now been recovered from the earthquake-damaged central city.

Senior Sergeant Graham Reeves says most public car parks have been emptied of vehicles abandoned following the quake on 22 February and police are beginning to recover vehicles from private buildings.

Mr Reeves says the vast majority of owners are very thankful to have their cars returned.

Some 5800 vehicles were in the central city at the time of the 6.3-magnitude quake.
