Polytech hopes for access to main campus soon

Christchurch Polytechnic will not be restarting some courses on Tuesday as hoped and remains off-limits following a devastating earthquake.

The campus is within the central city's quake cordon, an area severely damaged by the quake on 22 February and the polytech is unsure when the situation for about 8000 affected students will change.

Its administration and teaching have been transferred to four minor campuses througout Christchurch and to a variety of community facilities, including churches and a dance school.

Despite that, polytechnic chief executive Kay Giles says 85% of its courses have resumed and hardly any students have dropped out.

Ms Giles hopes Civil Defence will allow access to the main campus on Madras Street within the next week or two.
