Campervan village opens for displaced residents

Earthquake-displaced Christchurch residents are now able to sign up for temporary accommodation at a new camper van village - at a price.

The 350 vans are in place at the Canterbury A&P showgrounds.

To be eligible, people need to be able to prove their homes are uninhabitable.

While financial assistance is available, people will be charged for the accommodation and will have to pay for utilities, including power.

Rental costs start at $190 a week for a two-person camper van, rising to nearly $340 a week for a six-person van. People will also have to pay a two week bond.

The Department of Building and Housing says offers of temporary accommodation still outnumber demand, but it is predicting that will change as offices and schools reopen, major repairs to homes get underway and more people return to the city.
