Overseas students leave Canterbury University

About 300 international students have withdrawn from studying at Canterbury University since February's massive earthquake.

In the 22 February quake, almost 70 overseas students studying English at King's Education were killed in the collapse of the Canterbury Television building.

Canterbury University's vice chancellor, Rod Carr, says about 200 study abroad students, who complete just one semester, were transferred to other universities.

He says another 300 have left Canterbury university, but about 1200 have continued with their enrolment.

The Government is establishing a new agency to promote international education, which it hopes will to lure students back to New Zealand.

It will combine currently fragmented efforts by the Ministry of Education, Education New Zealand and Trade and Enterprise.
