Work has started on assembling one of the country's largest cranes, which will be used to dismantle part of the Catholic Cathedral in Christchurch.

The building's front two towers were damaged in the earthquake on 4 September last year and suffered further damage in the 22 February quake.

It is considered to be at risk of collapse in a significant aftershock and a large copper dome needs to be dismantled to make it safe.

A structural engineer from Opus International Consultants, Jamie Lester, says the 400-tonne crane is needed both to to handle the heavy weights and allow crews to stay at a safe distance from the building
